Toronto dorkbot is back on the scene.
I was happy to contribute to this splendidly interesting night, hosted by Liav at Interaccess last Thursday. Presenters (in order):
Patricia Rodriguez:
Nonstandard video

I was invited to talk about some of my own "nonstandard video" work. I brought in all sorts of little cameras and showed pieces and clips that took advantage of each camera's special features/limitations: mobile phone cam experiments, glitchy web-cam footage turns dark absurd narrative, cheap underwater cam + thermal springs + sunshine = exquisite light distortions ...
Stan Krzyzanowski:
Cone Oscilator & Interval

Stan showed us some amazing pieces involving the simple beautiful pine cone - all based on the discovery that if you wet a dry pine-cone, it will slowly close up, and if you dry out a closed (wet) pine-cone, it will open. (To see these experiments, click on the little pine-cone under "special sets".) He also brought in a contraption he invented to facilitate this phenomenon (the Pine Cone Oscillator) - which he documents and represents as stop-motion video: mesmerizing and delightful.
Cary Peppermint & Christine Nadir:
EcoArtTech
Cary discussed their project EcoArtTech showcasing some really cool stuff: uber-urban to remote wilderness bridged by sustainable technology. Imagine coming across a solar-powered audio installation while hiking in a remote region in the mountains... They also bring the country to your portable device - I'm into that :-)

Can anyone suggest to me
Can anyone suggest to me (and other surfers) what are some good social technology/geek/code nights in Toronto? I'd like to get out to ones that have a seminar each gathering around a certain topic, maybe even carpet sweeper ones in an office where we can practice or be taught on computers, just anything that's fun, really. I'm mostly interested in Ruby (even On Rails), MySQL setup and maint, shell use and scripting (esp. bash and tcsh), content management, writing/doc systems, project management, Windows/Mac/Linux system info stair carpet and maint, something cool and techy, or anything you think might be snazzy. Anything demoscene or tracking/.MOD related would be especially cool to know about, as a different taste...Individual evenings or pages that list events are welcome, though I really want what YOU think carpet installation is cool and have been to. If you're involved with the night itself, and could use some nice conversational music to be DJ'd, give me a shout -- all I need to bring is my laptop and my DJ controller.
